2008: MR-PET: A Hybrid Imaging System

In the last few years there has been increasing interest in hybrid MR-PET scanners. Several groups have been developing such scanners for the study of rodents. Some of these prototypes utilize innovative solid-state electronics such as APDs as a replacement of magneto-sensitive photomultipliers. First studies demonstrating the advantages of simultaneous MR-PET measurements have already been published. An industrial prototype for combined 3T-MR-PET in humans has being constructed and installed at the University of Tübingen, Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and the Forschungszentrum Jülich. The first acquired images of simultaneous MR-PET measurements demonstrate the feasibility of the new approach.
The workshop on MR-PET was to offer a platform to present and discuss the present state of both animal and human MR-PET scanners. The ability of MR-PET systems to retain the typical PET attribute of absolute quantitation, new instrumental progress as well as developments towards whole-body MR-PET and the involvement of ultra-high field MR were addressed. For each topic there was an invited speaker and a limited number of proffered presentations.
The program comprised six topics:
- state-of-the-art of small animal MR-PET scanners
- state-of-the-art of human MR-BrainPET scanners
- issues of quantitative PET in hybrid imaging
- improved MR-compatible PET components
- advantages and challenges of whole-body MR-PET and
- future MR-PET scanners utilizing ultra-high field.
The speakers, moderators and more than 100 attendees from 20 countries made the workshop a great success.
