Complex molecular architectures at surfaces

In the spirit of "Function through Architecture", complex molecular architectures are a promising pathway to obtain functional materials for applications in catalysis, sensing, and information processing. Understanding the structural organisation in these materials is a key issue. In this project we are focusing on self-organisation effects of complex organic molecular layers. Peculiar structure of self-organised molecular phases results often in specific electronic properties, which is prospective for "bottom-up" approach in nanotechnological applications [1]. Several exemplary systems have been addressed: Complex organic layers characterized by non-uniform electronic properties, e.g. tetracene β-phase on Ag(111); Binary and Compound organic phases, e.g. tetracene and DH4T on Ag(111) [2]; Phases of chiral and pro-chiral amino-acids [3].
