Sustainable Plant Production
The Institute of Bio- and GeoSciences(IBG-2): Plant Scsiences works on sustainable plant production in the research topics
- Dynamics and control of plant growth (leaf and root) and regulation of plant metabolism
- Dynamics and control of plant-internal transport (water, carbohydrates, nutrients, signal compounds)
- Dynamics of and within ecosystems and exchange of energy and substances between plants, soil and atmosphere (photosynthesis, root processes, biotic interactions, mechanisms of functional biodiversity, trace substances
- Enabling Technologies - novel procedures for quantifying plant performance in dynamically changing environments
From Molecules to Satellites
These competences are used for analyses of the underlying mechanisms of phenotypes. They support the sustainable production of biomass at high amount and (specific) quality, thereby improving the use of plants
- as edibles and animal feed,
- as renewable resources,
- for bio-energy and
- as reusable materials.
The breeding-oriented work at IBG-2: Plant Sciences considers the plant as a functional unit in a productive stand and as genetically defined individual in a population.
Research activities are scaled from optimising molecular key elements (e.g. pigments for photosynthesis) over tissues and whole plants to the remote sensing (including air-borne units and satellites) of plant properties.
Bioeconomy Science Center
The expertise in plant science at IBG-2 is connected in networks of agricultural research, microbial biotechnology, engineering and information science.
The Bioeconomy Science Center, a cooperation between the Forschungszentrum Jülich and institues in Aachen, Düsseldorf and Bonn will contribute to a sustainable plant use (bioeconomy). The scientific and strategic activities of the institute are embedded in European and world-wide networks.
