ZAM Text Processing (TeX)

Text Processing with TeX

The TeX package is installed on all central Unix systems at Forschungszentrum Jülich. It consists of commands which translate a LaTeX (TeX) source file in a device-independent page description format (a .dvi-file), converts this in formats required by printers or shows it in a preview window on the monitor.

For creating documents the author must cycle through three steps:

  • Create a source file in TeX-Format
  • Compile the source code with the TeX compiler
  • Preview or print the results
The package recommended by ZAM is LaTeX. It offers a general document type for creating articles, reports and books.

The TeX package is based on Thomas Esser's teTeX. A list of all local documentation about LaTeX and availably macro packages is located under file:/usr/local/texmf/doc/helpindex.html on your local machine (if TeX is installed).

A local copy of the catalogue of TeX and LaTeX related packages and tools, mostly available on CTAN, the Comprehensive TeX Archive Network is located under file:/usr/local/texmf/doc/help/Catalogue/catalogue.html.
Most entries have a link to a location on the local CTAN directory hierarchy which takes you to the source directory for that entry.

For PC/Windows ZAM distributes the MiKTeX package from Christian Schenk.
