Communication Applications and Services

The objective of this activity is the provision of supported communication applications and services, currently email, PC file services, remote installation services as well as videoconferencing services and support of PC/workstation integration into JuNet. The main tasks are the operation, maintenance, and - if necessary - upgrading of supported applications as well as the analysis of the applicability and implementation of new services and applications.

Mail Services

JSC operates the central mail services including a central mail store, POP/IMAP mail access and SMTP mail forwarding. A mail virus scanner is operating on the central SMTP-Relay, cleaning infected messages at the entrance. To enhance security while accessing mail, clients in external networks are only granted access in an encrypted way based on ssl server certificates issued by the FZJ Certificate Authority (CA). Authenticity, integrity and confidentiality of email content can be ensured by using user certificates, that are also issued by FZJ-CA. A number of precautions are taken against unsolicited mail, using the corresponding features of the SMTP server software. Backup is provided for the most important services.

PC/Workstation Services

JSC provides support for the integration of PCs to the JuNet environment for all MS Windows platforms. The recommended software is offered campus-wide on a PC file server at JSC and a CD system at the Central Electronics Laboratory (ZEL), and includes products that cover the fields of mathematics, data commmunications, PC security as well as a database system (Oracle). For using the Microsoft products under Linux/vmware within workstation groups recommended images which are adapted to the FZJ-environment are maintained for Windows 98 and Windows 2000/XP.

Video Conferencing

In a dedicated room JSC operates a flexible multimedia communications infrastructure to support FZJ staff in using videoconferencing applications based on IP unicast (H.320), IP multicast or ISDN (H.323). The configuration includes a Tandberg 880 and a Polyspan MP (ISDN or IP based videoconferencing units), as well as an Access Grid (AG) node consisting of 3 dual processor PCs (Windows XP, Linux) that operate the video capture, video display, and audio components of the AG hard- and software. The AG node includes professional mixing and echo suppression equipment to support high quality audio.
