External Communication
JSC is responsible for the data communication between the campus network JuNet and the outside world, including the INTERNET, dedicated connections to external LANs, and dial-in access to JuNet.INTERNET Connection
A main task is to provide a high-capacity and high quality connection from JuNet to the INTERNET. The FZJ is connected to the worldwide Internet with a capacity of 5 Gbit/s via the German research networkIn addition to the usual Unicast IP connectivity a native link to the MBONE (Multicast Backbone) through the X-WiN Interface is available for projects and multimedia applications that use IP Multicast.
JSC is actively supporting the development of the German Science network by paticipating in several DFN testbed projects. Currently JSC is involved in the project 100G testbed of DFN testing 40G and 100G technology.
Remote Branches
Further on the link of remote branch offices of FZJ departments to the JuNet and the Internet is realized using X-WiN point-to-point connections. For special applications of the Project Management Organizations PTJ, JSC operates a separate network based on local and leased lines to connect to the "Landesverwaltungsnetz" (LVN) of the federal state NRW.
Access Services
Two options of remote access to JuNet and its services are supported for the staff of the Research Centre Jülich. When connected to the INTERNET via an ISP they can get full access to all internal services of JuNet by setting up a VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection in a secure manner. To achieve this, they just need to install a small piece of VPN client software and perform some simple configuration steps and register a personal account.
Additionally remote Users can dial-in to the local network over analogue modem or ISDN lines via the JSC supplied Network Access Service. This service is based on two primary rate interfaces, an access router and a redundant radius server configuration. Emergency teams and scientists heavily use this service. VPN encryption techniques can optionally be combined with this direct dial-in service. They are described in more detail in section "Central network centric security measures".
