Network Management and Administration

When designing and running a campus network with more than 10000 participants the development, evaluation and ongoing design and deployment of management solutions for network devices become a key factor for a successive implementation of an integrative and all-embracing campus wide security and networking policy. Main objective of this activity is the evaluation and implementation of techniques dealing with the management of network devices (e.g. switches). This includes the selection of adequate management protocols and interfaces, the handling of device configurations, the gathering and analysis of information and statistics concerning the traffic flow as well as the status of the network from the vantage point of security and the assurance of high availability in combination with alarm generation in case of faults.

Administration

Another objective of JuNet management is to maintain a consistent database containing all relevant information for all IT-systems that are connected to JuNet (computers, printers, communication systems, etc.). This is mainly accomplished by a single network administration tool. This tool can be used to manage configuration data of IP-networks and -devices within JuNet. The administration tool supports the registration, change management and deletion of network objects and networks. It is continuously enhanced to match new requirements from the ever evolving networks. The administration tool contains several separate program packages which are used to automate many daily network administration tasks. It provides a single source of data from which configuration and initialization files and data tables for various network services like DNS or DHCP are generated, thus avoiding double update problems. For the same reason, the JuNet administration tool links to the dispatch user database instead of maintaining its own database of system administrators.
