Data Backup and Restore

Since 1993 JSC offers a centrally administered backup service for systems and workstations connected to JuNet by the program product TSM (Tivoli Storage Manager) which was formerly known as ADSM (ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager). Although the name of the program product changed the functionality stays.

After an initial full backup of all local data of the system or workstation only the changed or new data are copied daily to magnetic tapes in robot systems. The four most recent copies of a dataset are usually kept. This automatic process protects against loss of data due to disk failures, software errors or inadvertent deletion of data.

Data that was accidentally erased from disk can be restored interactivly by the user (owner) within four weeks without intervention of the administrator of the system.

If confidential or sensitive data has to be backed up the user has to take reponsibility for data encryption (IT Security Rules for Baseline Protection, Rule D4).

User data on the HPC systems JUROPA, JUGENE, JUMP, and the community clusters SoftComp, JUGGLE, and NICole/a, are automatically backed up by TSM. Users on these systems don't need to install any client software to use TSM functions.

PC and workstation users connected to JuNet using Windows7, Windows Vista/XP/NT/2000, Linux, IBM AIX, DEC/Compaq Tru64, SGI IRIX, SUN Solaris or HP UX may register for the data backup service by filling out the

and sending it to TSM backup management at JSC. After registration the appropriate TSM client must be on the system before the TSM functions can be used. For more information about data backup with TSM refer to the JSC documentation (in German):
