NIC: Education in Scientific Computing

The John von Neumann Institute for Computing (NIC) and the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) work hardly to introduce scientific computing to a wide public. This is done especially by organizing workshops, conferences, seminars, summer schools and guest student programmes, or by taking part in scientific exhibitons at conferences. The topic focus is lain on theoretical physics and theoretical chemistry. Proceedings of workshops and summer schools and reports on projects and research aktivities of the NIC are published in an own publication series.

* Conferences, Workshops

We also like to draw your attention to the Colloquium on Parallel Processing in scientific applications, which is organized together with the University Aachen, FhG-SCAI und the University of Cologne.

* Summer Schools

* Guest Students Programme

Since 2000 NIC/JSC organizes a guest students programme during the summer holidays to introduce scientific computing to young talents. The participants, students of natural sciences und engineering sciences, mathematics and computer science, take part at the research and development projects of JSC and of the NIC Research Group. During their work they are tutored each by a scientist.

* Scientific Exhibitions

The NIC regularly takes part with a Research Exhibit at the Supercomputing Conference, the world-wide leading conference on scientific high performance computing, which is annually organized by the big National Labs in the USA. Since several years the JSC organizes a joint exhibit of the German High Performance Computer Centres on the International Supercomputer Conference, which attracts experts and management people of the big German scientific computer centres and computer vendors.

* Education and Training of Mathematical-technical Software-Developers and Technomathematics

An important base and addition to the education in scientific computing is the education and training of mathematical-technical software developers (MaTSE) at JSC. These IT specialists work as application developers, system administrators, network experts, or database developers etc.. The theoretical education in mathematics, computer science, and programming languages is done at JSC; the practical experiences are made in IT-groups at the institutes of the research center Jülich or even in other companies.

Since 1998 the trainees may also enrol for a degree in Technomathematics at the Fachhochschule Aachen/Jülich, and receive after four further semesters the diploma as a Mathematician.
