Topic "Grid Computing"

Thema:
Computational Grids for High-End Scientific Applications

Referent:
Dr. Shantenu Jha, University College of London, London, UK

Inhalt:
The aim of the talk is to discuss via proven examples, how distributed computing techniques can be used to tackle "large" scientific applications.

We begin by motivating the need for computational grids - by which we mean distributed, heterogeneous and dynamic computing environments - for scientific computation. We will discuss the most commonly employed techniques used to grid-enable scientific computing applications today (and term them "first generation" scientific grid applications). Advances in grid-enabling large scientific applications so far, represent necessary steps in the right direction, but in order to "seamlessly" exploit further advances in networking, high-end computers and middleware capabilities there are important additional requirements that need to be considered. Based upon our experience of using a grid-of-grids, we will discuss some challenges and requirements in order to facilitate the simple, swift and successful uptake of these emerging capabilities. We will conclude by outlining ongoing efforts to create the "second generation" of scientific grid applications and will discuss some specific examples.
