Chairman

Prof. Dr. Achim Bachem

Professor Dr. Achim Bachem has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of Forschungszentrum Jülich since 1 October 2006.

He was previously a member of the Board of the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) from 1996 to 2006 and German delegate to the European Space Agency (ESA) from 1998 to 2002.

From 1983 to 1996, he was Professor of  Applied Mathematics and Director of the Mathematical Institute of the University of Cologne (from 1988 onwards he was also Director of the Institute of Computer Science and from 1993 a founder member and chairman of the board of the central facility  "Centre for Parallel Computing" (ZPR)). From 1989 to 1991 he was Dean of the Mathematical and Scientific Faculty of the University of Cologne.

From 1982 to 1983, he was Professor of Operations Research at the University of Bonn, and from 1980 to 1982 Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.

From 1969 to 1973, Achim Bachem studied mathematics and physics at the Universities of Cologne and Bonn. In 1976 he took his doctorate and in 1980 he completed his Habilitation in the field of discrete and combinatorial mathematics at the University of Bonn.

Apart from discrete and combinatorial mathematics, his scientific interests also include scientific computing and supercomputing. Professor Bachem has published five books and 70 scientific papers and has given numerous national and international lectures in the field of combinatorial optimization, complexity theory and scientific computing.
Professor Bachem is a member of numerous supervisory and advisory councils of research organizations, and industrial and business enterprises.

• Vice-President of the Helmholtz Association, coordinator of the research field "key technologies"
• Chairman of PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), a pan-European Research Infrastructure for High Performance Computing
  
• member of scientific academies such as the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech), the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), the Academy of Geosciences Hannover and others
• member of the supervisory council, university council or advisory council of various scientific institutes and institutions in Germany and abroad and member of the supervisory board of industrial companies such as Wincor-Nixdorf AG and Pironet NDH AG

Professor Bachem was born in 1947, and is married with two children.
