Prof. Dr.-Ing. Harald Bolt

Harald Bolt (born 1960) became Member of the Board of Directors on 1 February 2008.

He had previously been a scientific member of the Max Planck Society and director at the Max Planck Institute of Physics in Garching since 1999. He is involved in various international committees in a number of functions including the Advisory Group Energy for the EU Directorates-General for Research as well as Transport and Energy and is also a member of the Supervisory Board of the European fusion agency "Fusion for Energy".

Harald Bolt studied mechanical engineering in Aachen from 1980 to 1985. He took his doctorate at RWTH Aachen University in 1988 and at Nagoya University, Japan, in 1990. From 1986 to 1988, he was a Euratom visiting scientist in Japan at the Universities of Osaka and Nagoya and also at the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute. From 1988 to 1990, he was at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics working in the group planning the next European fusion reactor and was also involved in work on ITER. From 1990 to 1992, he was active in teaching and research as an Associate Professor at the University of Tokyo. From 1992 to 1998, he headed a plasma technology working group at Research Centre Jülich. In 1995, he was appointed professor by the University of Wuppertal and since then has taught at Munich University of Technology.

In his scientific research, Harald Bolt has largely been concerned with materials science. He developed materials and coatings that help to confine the hot plasma in fusion devices like ITER and he also investigated the interactions of these materials with the fusion plasma. In the European Union’s 6^th Framework Programme, he coordinated one of the largest research projects in the materials sector, the EU ExtreMat Project (New Materials for Extreme Environments) with 37 partner institutions in 13 European countries.
