Dr. Ulrich Krafft (born 1955) was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors in Research Centre Jülich on 15 January 2007 and also took over the Executive Division for Infrastructure.
From 1998 until the time he took up employment in Research Centre Jülich, Dr. Krafft headed divisions in the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Initially he was head of Funding Programmes for Vocational Training and the Promotion of Career Advancement, and since May 2005, head of Controlling. Between 1994 and 1997, he was responsible for the department of Budget, Administration and Strategic Planning at the German Space Agency (DARA). From 1991 until 1994, he was Personal Assistant to the State Secretary of the Federal Ministry for Research and Technology. In 1990 and 1991, he was head of Human Resources/Human Resources Development in the coordinating office for the liquidation of the institutes and organisations of the former Academy of Sciences in East Germany (KAI-AdW). In 1986 Dr. Krafft began his career in the Federal Ministry for Research and Technology in the division dealing with research and technology policy issues.
Ulrich Krafft studied at the University of Cologne and completed his degree in economics in 1980. In 1983, he also completed his PhD there (Dr. rer. pol.). Between 1981 and 1986, he worked as a research assistant, followed by a position as a research scientist at the Research Institute for Political Science and European Questions in the University of Cologne. During his time there, he also spent several months abroad conducting research at the University of Liège (1980 - 1981) and the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London (1985).
